Reflection II: On the Subject of Pain

The pain will cleanse your mind…

Last night, I went for something I strangely considered a rite of passage: getting a tattoo. During that night, surrounded by friends and strangers engaged in laughter and banter, I learnt something about myself; resilience and concentration. Concentration is easy to start, but very difficult to hold onto, like water that will run out without a vessel. With the distractions surrounding me during the process, it was doubly difficult a challenge to maintain composure. During that ritual, I focused on the pain as the needles dug and scratched into my skin. That’s the thing about pain and injury; it’s a fantastic reminder that we’re a fragile species despite our many technological achievements. I have braved one fire to go through another and I am glad I did.
